This Post will explain step by step how to install DNS Server on Windows server 2012 R2. These Steps are Similar for Windows Server 2008, Windows 2012 and Windows Server 2016
To Install DNS Server in Windows Server 2012, we have to add DNS role first, To do this we need to open “Server Manager” it can open using the shortcut on the task bar or from Start > Server Manager
In Server Manager window click on the option “Add roles and features”
Then it loads “Add Role Wizard”, Click on next to continue
In the next window select “Role-based or feature-based installation” default selection and click on next
In the next window, we have to select in which server we have to install this role. in this case, it will be local. so keep the default selection and click on next.
In the next option select the “DNS Server” and click on next
Then it will prompt a window to inform about the additional features that DNS role required. Click on “Add features” to continue.
In the next window it gives the option to select any additional feature, click on next to continue
After that, it will give brief information about the DNS role, click on next button to continue
In the next window, it will give information about the selected features and click on “Install” to begin the installation
Then it will start the installation and we have to wait till it completes
When Installation is completed click on close.
If you want to use the command line to configure your DNS, use the dnscmd command.
Within the Server Manager, to configure the DNS Server, click the Tools menu and select DNS. This brings up the DNS Manager window.
